There are more than a hundred of "Gassho-zukuri" farmhouses, the traditional buildings with thatched roof made of Japanese pampas grass, in this mountain village of Shirakawa-go. Since the shape of the roof resembles hands in prayer, it is called "Gassho (literally means praying hands) building or style." The village was registered as an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1995.

Shirakawa-go is one of the heaviest snowall areas in Japan.
Shirakawa-go is known for experiencing particularly heavy snowfall, and the snow accumulates can reach to 2 meters or higher.
For a certain days in January and February, Shirakawa-go Gassho-style village is illuminated.
As the snow continues to fall, lights come on in the windows of the Gassho-style houses, and the snow piled up on the thatched roofs is illuminated in white by the light of the lamps.

Deai Bridge connects the Gassho village of
Shirakawa-go and Seseragi Parking Lot. Tourists will cross this bridge to arrive at Shirakawa-go. The miraculous bridge may make you feel as if you are travelling back in time from the modern society.
